The Lagos State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that the recent Supreme Court of Nigeria decision signals a watershed moment in resolving the party’s leadership issue, with the potential to restore order, legality, and institutional stability.
In a statement issued on Friday, the party’s spokesman, Prince Dr Christopher Odianarewo, said that the verdict annulled the November 2025 Ibadan National Convention and confirmed Samuel Anyanwu’s suspension, as well as that of other previous National Working Committee members.
According to him, the judgement effectively invalidates all institutions, decisions, and acts linked with the impacted leadership factions, including the Abuja Convention on March 29, 2026.
Odianarewo stated that the development gives a legal basis for the PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, led by Adolphus Wabara, to exercise interim party management in accordance with Section 32(5) of the PDP Constitution (as revised in 2017).
He emphasised that the BoT’s intervention should not be interpreted as a power struggle, but rather as a constitutional move intended to avert a leadership vacuum and stabilise the party’s operations.
“The action by the Board of Trade is more than just a band-aid. It is a stabilising force aiming at restoring the party’s course toward legality, unity, and democratic integrity,” he stated.
The spokesman urged party members and stakeholders to set aside internal differences and support the transitional leadership, underlining that the period of alternative structures and conflicting directives has come to an end.
He also expressed support for the Board of Trustees’ decision to call an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to assist the formation of an Interim National Working Committee.
Odianarewo stated that the decision is crucial for restoring internal democracy and repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 national elections.
While identifying the current crisis as a defining moment rather than a collapse, he also stated that it provides an opportunity for reform, discipline, and reconciliation inside the party.
He emphasised the importance of a united PDP in providing Nigerians with a genuine opposition alternative.
“The PDP must rise, not as a fractured entity, but as a united force ready to reclaim its place in Nigeria’s democratic landscape,” he stated.
