Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, called the terrorist attack on the Niger community, which resulted in the deaths of thirty persons and the kidnapping of numerous others, a national shame.
Obi stated that it’s time to break the nation’s cycle of violence and insecurity in a post on his verified X handle on Sunday.
He claims that Nigerians desperately need an all-hands-on-deck strategy—a planned, capable, and resolute effort to put an end to the threat of insecurity that has become a daily occurrence.
“As we begin a new year, the cycle of needless killings and instability continues unabated across our country, which is extremely concerning and intolerable. The terrible terrorist attack at the Kasuwan-Daji Market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area today in Niger State claimed the lives of over forty people.
Several people were killed when armed bandits attacked Bong village in Plateau State’s Doemak District only yesterday. Two days ago, numerous communities in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State were attacked by bandits. The Unguwar Naino hamlet in Katsina State was also attacked on New Year’s Day, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries.
These episodes are a part of a terrible and unsettling pattern of violence that has unfortunately become accepted as the usual. The toll it takes on families and communities is incalculable, and the persistent failure to provide residents with basic security is a national disgrace. We cannot continue to accept these murders as the norm as a country. The government’s first priority must continue to be protecting human life.
“To the families who have lost loved ones in Niger, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, and other affected communities this New Year, no words can truly ease your pain. But know that the country is grieving with you. I hope this period of unbearable loss brings you resilience, comfort, and strength. “We must break this cycle of violence,” he wrote.
