Citizens of Anambra State are outraged about the purported transfer of N100 million from the Anambra State Government account to the bank account of Victor Egbetokun, who is reported to be the son of Kayode Egbetokun, the former Inspector-General of Police.
Sahara Reporters said that the money was transferred in four tranches of N25 million each.
During a live television appearance, Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin hinted to the claim being genuine. He stated that the former IGP’s son acknowledged it and was urged to direct his account officer to reverse the funds, which was immediately done.
Despite this, the news has alarmed many Anambra residents, who have voiced amazement at how the state’s finances are managed under Prof Chukwuma Soludo.
Others believe the transfer was more than a coincidence because the money might have ended up in any other account, particularly that of an Anambra indigene or contractor, rather than Egbetokun, who has no business in the state.
As the issue dominated mainstream debate, Kingsley Ubani, a public affairs analyst and vocal critic of the state government, stated: “The question is how did the money get there? Out of the 36 states in the federation, it had to be Anambra State, which is run by an acclaimed Professor of Economics, where N100 million will “miss the road” and the state government failed to quietly collect it until it became a matter of public discourse.
